The Centre was Officially opened by Cr. Merv Genrich, Redland Shire Chairman, on Saturday 18th July 1987. The Centre had been in operation since the 1st June 1987.
The Donald Simpson Over 50 Leisure Centre carries in its title the name of a person who was greatly respected within the Redland Shire.
This respect came from his extensive involvement in community life and his personal contribution to many local organisations following his appointment as Shire Clerk in 1963. He performed this role for fifteen years.
Donald Simpson was a gentleman with high ideals, a man of peace, abhoring violence or injustice. He tried to make life a happy place for young and old and in particular for the people of the Redlands, a place he loved and where he loved to live.
For the Donald Simpson Over 50 Centre to be so named, six years after the death of Donald Simpson, speaks volumes for the respect his life commanded.
The Board of Management is responsible for the overall operation and financial management of the Centre.
Day to day operation is the responsibility of the three staff members in their roles as Manager, Office Administrator and General Service Officer.
Thirty Four (34) separate activities are undertaken each week by volunteer convenors. Visit the DSC Activities link for additional information on individual activities.
There is always room for more activities to be undertaken provided that some responsible volunteer accepts the role of convenor. The tasks associated with this role are minimal and all that may be required is to collect the attendance fee, usually $2.00 for members, record the payments in the attendance book provided and ensure that the allocated area is setup and cleared away at the end of each activity.
These are just some of the more popular activities at the DSC:
